Fire Safety Procedures

If you discover fire or smoke in your work area or building, the following procedures must be followed:

  1. Remove everyone from the immediate danger area. This means the room of origin or immediate vicinity of the fire.
  2. Close the door to the room of origin. This will act to contain the fire and smoke to that one room for a long period of time.
  3. Go to nearest alarm pull station and activate the alarm.
  4. Call 911 or the direct line to your local Fire Department and give the following information:
    1. Nature of the emergency: Fire
    2. Your name
    3. Complete street address of where the fire is (be prepared to spell the street name):
    4. Building name (or the name of your business if appropriate):
    5. Suite number and/or floor where the fire is located
    6. Closest street intersection
    7. A telephone number they may reach you if they need to call you back
      (DO NOT STAY AT THE PHONE IF YOU ARE IN DANGER)
  5. Call Transwestern’s Property Management office 630.505.7900 and provide the following information:
    1. Your name:
    2. Nature of Emergency: Fire
    3. Suite number and/or floor where the fire is located
    4. Telephone number you are calling from
    5. Whether or not you have contacted the Fire Department
  6. If the fire is small and confined to one object (e.g. trash can), locate the fire extinguisher appropriate for fighting that type of fire and attempt to control the fire. Information on fire extinguishers can be found on page 12. Never attempt to fight the fire unless:
    1. You know how to operate the fire extinguishing equipment
    2. You have the appropriate type of fire extinguisher
    3. The fire is small
    4. You have access to an exit if you fail to put the fire out

If the fire cannot be controlled, seal off the area by closing the doors.
