Tenant Handbook
Fire Prevention
The most effective method of fighting fires is through prevention. Transwestern Management and Maintenance staff will perform regular inspections of common areas, fire warning and fire suppression equipment. None-the-less, it is still important for occupants/tenants to regularly inspect their area for potential fire hazards, such as overloaded electrical outlets and storage of flammable materials. Stairwells and corridors must also be kept free of trash ad storage boxes.
- Building occupants must NOT:
- Leave oil and/or grease covered rags in your office.
- Overload electrical circuits or outlets.
- Block emergency exits
- Cover the sprinkler heads. The heat from the fire must reach the head for it to release and extinguish the fire.
- Leave kitchen appliances on and unattended.
- Store flammable liquids if it can be avoided. If it is necessary, store in an approved container, with lids tightly closed and away from heat, flames or other flammable materials.
- Smoke anywhere in the building
- Use space heaters
- Building occupants SHOULD:
- Report and repair appliances that are not in good working order. Short circuits or sparks from a frayed cord could start a fire.
- Verify you can hear the building’s emergency alarm system from your office as well as from all points on your floor. Building management should conduct regular tests on each floor.
- Know how to use a simple fire extinguisher and how to report a fire.
ALWAYS BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS
